January

New Issues of the FES Information Series
In the course of the year, FES Korea will publish about ten issues of the FES Information Series (in Korean). All titles will be available for download.

Research Stay in Germany
A Korean scholar of Yongsan University visits Germany for one month to do research on "The Effect of Basel II on the Real Estate Development Finance in the EU Countries".

Peace and Reunification
The Citizen's Peace Forum, Civil Society Organizations Network in Korea (CSONK), supported by the FES, meets regularly to discuss the prospects of peace on the Korean peninsula under different aspects. The results of this project will be published in December 2009.

February

Security of Women's Labour Right
Korea Women Link, supported by the FES, starts a research project on the realities of women's employment and policies and measures to secure women's labour rights during economic crisis. A symposium will be held later in the year, while a report on this project will be published toward the end of 2009.

Publication: Guide Book of Democracy and Civil Activism for the Young Generation
People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (PSPD), supported by the FES, publishes the book "Passionate Generation – Story of Teenagers Changing the World with Imagination and Courage ". The underlying research was carried out in 2008.

2010 Peace White Paper
People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (PSPD), supported by the FES, starts a research project on "2010 Peace White Paper". PSPD publishes the "2010 Peace White Paper ".
 

Financial and Economic Crisis
Prof. Dr. Sebastian Dullien, University of Applied Sciences, Berlin, takes part in the workshop "The German Economy in Crisis. Current situation and trade unions’ behaviour", organised by the FKTU Research Center. Furthermore, he gave an assessment of the reactions of the EU and Germany to the financial and economic crisis at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP).

German Unification Outcomes
Professor Dullien also participated in a workshop on “Economic outcomes and policy lessons after twenty years of German unification” at the Korea Development Institute (KDI).

March

Government Budgeting and Women's Movement
The Korea Women's Associations United (KWAU), supported by the FES, initiates a research project on "Appraisal of Government Budgeting and Women's Movement” and holds a symposium on this issue. A report on the results will be published later in the year.

Challenges of Korean Women Workers' Movement
The Korean Women Workers Associations (KWWA), supported by the FES, starts a research project on the reaction of the Korean women workers’ movement to economic crisis, focusing on strategies to foster and enhance the social economy based on reciprocity and solidarity. A workshop will be held in November. The results of this project will be published in December.

European and Asian Affairs
The Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) and the EU Research Center (EURC) of Korea University, supported by FES, organises a special lecture series on European and Asian affairs for graduate and post-graduate students during 2009.

Documentary for Twenties
People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (PSPD), supported by the FES, begins with the preparation of  a civic education documentary for the generation of the twenties. The results of this project will be published on a DVD in December.

German Unification
Dr. Werner Kamppeter, the FES representative in Korea, gives a lecture on economic and social outcomes of the German unification process at the Ministry of Unification.

Dr. Irina Mohr, a German expert from the FES office in Berlin, too gives a lecture at the Ministry of Unification on the German unification process paying particular attention to the perceptions and opinions of East German citizen.


Industrial Relation
YOON Youngmo, Korea Labour and Society Institute (KLSI), and Dr. BAE Kyu Shik, Korea Labour Institute KLI), take part in a two-day seminar organised the FES Shanghai office on "Comparative Industrial Relations: Germany/Europe-Korea-China" in Hangzhou; co-organiser is the College of Public Administration of the University of Zhejiang.

April

Employment, Labour and Social Security Law
The Korea Labor and Society Institute (KLSI), supported by the FES, begins a research project on employment, labour and social security laws for contingent work in Korea, Germany and the USA. A workshop will be organized later in the year. A report on the results of this effort will be published toward the end of this year.

Irregular Employment and Irregular Workers
In a FES-supported research project the Korea Labor and Society Institute (KLSI) focuses on irregular employment, industrial relations and the trade union movement. The results will be presented at a workshop in December 2008 and be published afterwards.

Research Stay in Germany
A Korean scholar from the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies visits Germany for a six-month research project on the social market economy and the Korean developmental state.

Government Delegation to Study the German Unification Process
Four Korean officials visit East Germany in a program organized by the head office of the FES in Germany.

Global Financial Crisis
A professor of Sogang University and a researcher of the Korea Development Institute (KDI) participate in a two-day international symposium on "Challenges of the Global Financial Crisis – Towards a ‘New Economic Multilateralism’” in Shanghai co-organized by the Shanghai Institute for International Studies (SIIS) and the FES Shanghai office.

Contract and Agency Labour
5 trade unionist take part in a regional seminar on this issue in Singapore. It is jointly organized by the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers’ Unions (ICEM), the Chemical Industries Employee’s Union (CIEU) and the FES Singapore office.

Visit of Mrs. HAN Myeong Sook to Germany
The former Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea visits Germany on invitation of the FES taking part in academic events and meeting persons of the German academia and politics.
 

Challenges for the Korean Civil Society
The Institute of Korean Studies of the Freie Universitaet Berlin and the Korea Democracy Foundation (KDF), supported by the FES, jointly held an international conference on "Challenges for Civil Society after Democratic Transformation - Experiences of the Post-Socialist Countries in Eastern Europe and Reunified Germany" in Berlin. Mrs. HAN Myeong Sook gives the keynote speech at this conference.

ICEM Asia-Pacific Regional Conference
5 union activists participate in this conference in Singapore, organized by the ICEM and the FES Singapore office.

Peace, Democracy and Prosperity in East Asia
The Korean Society for German History, supported by the FES, holds on a three-day international conference on "The Vision of an East Asian Community and the Tasks of Korean Unification, Viewed from the Experiences of the Tasks of the European Integration and German Division and Unification". Among others Prof. Wilfried Loth, Duisburg-Essen University, and Prof. Gerard Bossuat, Université de Cergy-Pontoise, participated in this conference.
 

The keynote speech to this conference was delivered by former President Kim Dae-Jung.

Activists Academy 2009
The Korea Democracy Foundation (KDF) develops and operates two programs to improve capability-building for conducting civic education for democracy in Korea.

Social Democracy in Asia
A member of the External Cooperation Committee of the Democratic Labor Party (DLP) presents a paper and takes part in an international conference on "Responding to a Systemic Crisis - Asian Social Democrats in Search of Policy and Practical Solutions" in Manila. It is jointly organized by the Olof Palme International Centre (OPIC), the Australian Labour Party (ALP) and the FES Manila office.

International Framework Agreements
An ICEM project coordinator for ICEM Asia MNC's & Social Dialogue project, participates in a three-day brainstorming on "International Framework Agreement in Asia" in Singapore, co-organized by the Global Union Federations (GUFs) and the FES Indonesia office.

Alumni Association of  former FES scholarship holders 
The initial meeting for the founding of the Alumni Association of  former FES scholarship holders is celebrated. Mr. Reineke Schmoll-Eisenwerth attends this meeting and gives speech on the evolution of the FES scholarship program and the challenges brought about by the Bologna Process.


 
 



 

Herta Daeubler-Gmelin
Prof. Herta Daeubler-Gmelin, chairwoman of the Committee for Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid of the German Bundestag, invited by the FES Korea office, gives various lectures and engages in several talks concerning human rights, gender issues and constitutional reform.

6th Asia-Europe Roundtable (AER)
A researcher Ho from the Korea Institute for Defense and Analyses takes part in the 6th Asia-Europe Roundtable (AER)  "Minority Conflicts - Towards an ASEM Framework for Conflict Management". It is jointly organized by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) and the FES Singapore office.

Politics and sustainable Development
A Korean scholar from Korea University, participates in an international conference on "Politics and Sustainable Development in the Context of  Globalization and International Integration - Theory and Reality" in Hanoi, co-organized by the Academy of Journalism and Communication (AJC) and the FES Hanoi office. He presents a paper on sustainable development and the impact of globalization on the developmental state.

Race and Hegemony in Asia
Two German experts, Ms. Silke Baer, Cultures Interactive, Berlin, and Dr. Harald Weilnboeck, Cultural and Media Studies EU research project "Media Psychology", University of Zurich, participate in the 2nd international workshop on "Linking Race and Hegemony in Asia: Drawing Implications of Practitioners" in Seoul. This conference is jointly organized by the Asian Regional Exchange for New Alternatives (ARENA), the Korea Democracy Foundation and the FES Korea office. Other participants come from Asia, the US and Europe.

Farewell to Hatred and Racism
Dr. Harald Weilnboeck gives a lecture on "Farewell to Hatred and Racism - From Group Work with Violent Delinquents to Literature" at the WGK of the DAAD in Goethe Institute Seoul.

Research Stay in Germany
A Korean scholar from Hongik University visits Germany for one month to collect information for an ongoing research project.

PR Strategy Development
The Institute of Labor History (ILH), Sungkonghoe University, produces a documentary film on temporary workers in broadcasting industry. The ILH holds a symposium on "Labor Conditions and Working Realities of Program Directors in Irregular Employment" in Seoul.

Research Stay in Germany
A Korean scholar of Myongji University visits Germany for two months to do research on "Global financial crisis: political causes and counter measures in Germany".

Birth of Social Hero
The Hope Institute, supported by the FES Korea office, starts a research project on the visions and activities of social entrepreneurs in Germany, interviewing about fifteen Ashoka Fellows. The results of this project will be published early next year.

Civic Education for Democracy
The Korea Democracy Foundation (KDF) and the FES Korea co-organize the teachers' training program “Civic education for democracy 2009”. It is intended to help teachers to educate students to become active and competent citizens able to foster democracy in Korea

Two Korean union activists participate in a workshop on "Training on Core Labour Standards & ILO Supervisory Mechanism for the Promotion of Freedom of Association" in Bangkok, co-organized by the ILO International Training Centre and the FES.

Participatory Budgeting
A Korean scholar from Ulsan University takes part in an international conference on "Participatory Budgeting in Asia and Europe. Key Challenges of Participation" in Hangzhou, China, co-organized by Zhejiang University and the FES office in Shanghai.

Trade Union Delegation to Study the Korean Union System
Six Vietnamese unionist visit Korea in a program organized by the FES Korea office.

Power Elites in East Germany
The Korean-German Association of Sociologists, supported by the FES, holds an international conference on "Changes of Social Status of Power Elites in Germany before and after Reunification" in Seoul. Two German experts participate in this conference.
 
 

Health Care System in Germany
A delegation of the Korean Health & Medical Workers Union (KHMU) visits Germany to study the German health care system.

Global Financial Crisis
The Korean-German Academy of Economics and Management, supported by the FES, organises an international conference on "Global Financial Crisis in Germany and Korea". Two German experts participate in this conference.

Organizing Workers
The Building and Wood Workers International (BWI) and the FES jointly hold a regional seminar on "Organizing Workers within New Forms of Employment Relationships" in Seoul.

Visiting Fellowship Programm
A professor of Songgonghoe University visits the FES Geneva office for one month to do research on the human rights approach to peace as possible agenda for deliberation in the UN.

Freedom of Opinion and Expression in Cyberspace
The Korean Network for International Human Rights (KNIHR), supported by the FES, holds an international symposium on "Freedom of Opinion and Expression in Cyberspace: The situation and Challenges in East Asia" in Seoul.

Social Welfare Policy
The Korea Social Security Association (KSSA), the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs (KIHSA) and the FES jointly hold a Korean-German Seminar on "Allotment of Roles and Responsibilities in Social Welfare Policies between Central and Local Governments in Korea and Germany". Professor Rainer Pitschas from the University of Administrative Science in Speyer presents the German case.

Trade Union Training Program
A unionist from the Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU) takes part in a workshop in Jakarta on "Trade Union Training on Negotiation and Collective Bargaining Skills for Youth" co-organised by the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITC-ILO) and the FES Indonesia office.

Energy Security
Three NGO activists participate in a two-day international conference on "Energy Security in Southeast Asia and beyond - from Competition to Cooperation. Civil Society's Stake in Asia and Europe's Energy Policy". The conference is organised by the RSIS Centre for Non-Traditional Security Studies, Nanyang Technological University Singapore and the FES Singapore office.

Asian-European Dialogue
The President of the FKTU Research Center, and a researcher of the Korea Labor & Society Institute (KLSI) take part in an Asia-Europe Dialogue Forum for Labour Think Tanks / Research and Training Institutes, organized by the FES and the Hans-Böckler-Stiftung in Düsseldorf, Germany.

German Unification
Dr. Werner Kamppeter, the FES representative in Korea, talks on "Conceivable Lessons from the German Unification Miracle" at Ewha Womans University on occasion of the 9th Kim Okgil Memorial Lecture "Global Peace and the Future of the Korean Peninsula".

Economic Outcomes of the German Unification Process
Dr. Werner Kamppeter participates in the conference "20 Years after Collapse of the Berlin Wall and Prospects for Cooperation between South and North in the Korean Peninsula" jointly organized by the Institute for National Security Strategy (INSS) and the Export-Import Bank of Korea.

Dr. Christine Bergmann, a former minister of the Federal government in Germany and member of the board of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, talks on the collapse of the Berlin wall in 1989 to former FES scholarship recipients.

Dr. Bergmann participates in a conference of the Korea Women Worker's Association (KWWA) and delivers a presentation on "Neoliberalism and Gender Politics: Women's Precarious Employment in Germany".

Indonesia and G-20 Process
A researcher from Institute of Foreign Affairs & National Security (IFANS) participates in Bandung, Indonesia, in an expert group meeting on "Indonesia and the G-20 Process" jointly organized by the Department for International Relations of Parayangan University and the FES Indonesia office.

Network of Social Democracy in Asia
A researcher of the New Community Institute participates in the 2nd Regional Conference on "Effecting Real Change in Local Governance: Perspectives for Social Democratic Policies" in Penang, Malaysia. the conference is organised by the Olaf Palme International Centre and the FES Philippine office.

Humanitarian and Development Assistance to DPRK
The Korea Sharing Movement (KSM) and the FES jointly organise an international conference on " Humanitarian and Development Assistance to DPRK: Current Humanitarian Situation and Development Agenda". This conference is supported by the Ministry of Unification, the Korea Institute of National Unification and the EU Delegation of the European Commission in Seoul.

December

Long-term Care Insurance
Dr. Matthias von Schwanenfluegel, Head of Directorate 'Long-term care' at the Federal Ministery of Health, takes part in an international conference on the role of  long-term care insurance and its implications as a social security policy. This event is jointly organised by the Social Security (KSSA), the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs (KIHASA) and the FES Korea office.

Human Rights, Development and International Economic Crisis
Three Lawyers  from the Minbyun (Lawyers for a democratic society) take part in an International Preparatory Committee (IPC) meeting in Manila for the Conference of Lawyers in Asia and Pacific V (COLAP V).

Migrant Workers Convention
The Joint Committee with Migrants in Korea (JCMK), supported by the FES Korea office, conducts a nation-wide campaign for ratifying the Migrant Workers Convention.

Everyday Democracy, Participation, Social Innovation
The Hope Institute, supported by the FES, prepares a book for "The Everything Series" that aims to be a tool for identifying ordinary people's interest and problems and enabling processes of social innovation.

IMF Reform
Two Korean experts participate in a high-level dialogue on "Asian Perspectives on the Future Role of the IMF" in Singapore co-organized by the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and the FES office in Singapore.

February

Challenges of Korean Women Workers' Movement
The Korean Women Workers Associations (KWWA), supported by the FES, initiates a research project on the challenges faced by the women workers movement and the need of new approaches. A workshop will be held in October.
The results of this project will be published in December.

Public Long-term Care Service
Detlev Beyer-Peters, President of the Workers Council of AWO, a non-profit organization that operates hundreds of old-age care homes in Germany, and active member of Verdi, the German public sector union, takes part, together with Dr. Werner Kamppeter, in a workshop on "Public Long-term Care Services in Germany", organized by the Korean Transportation, Public Services Workers Union.

Social Justice and Human Rights
3 Lawyers of
the Korean Public Interest Lawyers’ Group Gonggam (Beautiful Foundation) participate in a two-day regional conference on "Lawyering for Social Justice and Human Rights" in Manila organized by the Alternative Law Groups (ALG).

Sexual Harassment Legislation in Korea
Korea Women Link, supported by the FES, starts a research project on the achievements of and challenges to sexual-harassment legislation in Korea and will hold a symposium on these issues later in the year. The results of this project will be published toward the end of 2008.

Welfare and Socialization of Social Service

The Korea Women's Associations United (KWAU), supported by the FES, initiates a research project on welfare and the socialization of social service for “care-work” and holds a symposium on this issue. A report on the results will be published later in the year.

April

Trade Union Movement and Solidarity
The Korea Labour and Society Institute (KLSI), supported by the FES, begins a research project on the trade union movement and relevant solidarity concepts of trade unionism. A workshop will be organised in November. Afterwards a report on the results of this effort will be published.

Labour Welfare Strategies and Industrial Unionism
In recent years industrial unionism has been on the rise in Korea. As a consequence collective bargaining becomes more wide ranging and complex. In a FES-supported research project the Korea Labour and Society Institute (KLSI) focuses on labour welfare strategies within this broader agenda. The results will be presented at a workshop in December 2008 and be published afterwards.

Gender Mainstreaming and Gender Budgeting
Dr. Regina Frey, a German expert attends a workshop organised by the Korea Women's Associations United (KWAU) and speaks on the "Berlin Gender Budgeting Process".

Publication: Peace White Paper 2008
The People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (PSPD), supported by the FES,
publishes  "Peace White Paper. Civil Action for Building a Peace State". The underlying research was carried out in 2007.

Lecture: German Unification
Dr. Werner Kamppeter, the FES representative in Korea, gives a lecture on German reunification at the Korea University.

Role of NGOs regarding South-North Korean Relations
The Korean Sharing Movement, supported by the FES, initiates a research project on the role of NGOs in the relations between North and South Korea. The results will be discussed at a forum in September.

European and Asian Affairs
The Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) and the EU Research Center (EURC) of Korea University, supported by FES, organises a special lecture series on European and Asian affairs for graduate and post-graduate students during 2008.

Making Multi-Cultural Society
The Joint Committee for Migrant Workers in Korea (JCMK), supported by the FES, holds an International workshop on "Making Multi-Cultural Society – Policy Tasks for Korean Society in Comparison with the Cases of Germany and the U.S. ". Dr. Holger Kolb, University of Münster, presents the German case.

June

Social Security
Prof. Kim Kyosung, Chungang Unversity, and Prof. Lee Eun-Jeung, University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, participate in a two-day international symposium on "State-based Welfare - Prospects of Social Security and Harmony in Asia and Europe" in Beijing. The symposium is co-organized by the Social Security Research Center, Renmin University, the China Social Insurance Association and the FES.

Korean-German Economic Relations and Recent Developments of the Korean Economy
This symposium war organized on the occasion of 30th Anniversary of the Korean-German Economic Association (KDGW) by the KDGW and the Deutsches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (DIW) in Berlin.

Two trade union activists take part in a three-day seminar on "Contract Labour" in Hanoi, co-organised by I
nternational Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM) and the FES.

Social Justice and Human Rights
One NGO activist from the Asia Institute participates in a three-day conference, organized by Asia-Europe People’s Forum, on "Asserting people-centered and participatory democracy, reclaiming human rights" in Manila.

Long-term Care Insurance
A long-term care insurance scheme will be implemented in Korea from July 2008. Against this background the Korean Association of Social Security Law, supported by the FES, holds an international conference to draw on operating experiences in Germany and Japan. Dr. Kamppeter presents the paper on "Evaluation the Long-term Care Insurance in Germany".

Research stay in Germany
A Korean scholar from Seoul National University visits Germany for two months to do research on the participation of citizens in budget policies of local authorities and during crisis management.

Research Stay in Germany
A Korean scholar from the Kangnam National University goes to Germany for six-months research project on the impact of the oecumenical movement in Europe on social movements in Korea.

Race, Racism and Hegemony in Asia
Race and racism are ubiquitous in Asia, yet little talked about, even less so in their relation to hegemonic, civilisational orderings, which are all part of European modernity since Enlightenment. These issues are discussed with participants from Asia, the US and Europe at a conference jointly organized by the Asian Regional Exchange for New Alternatives (ARENA), the Institute for East Asian Studies at SungKongHoe University (IEAS) and the FES.

Study Tour on German Development Cooperation in Indonesia
With support of the FES offices in Seoul and Jakarta a delegation of People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (PSPD) visits Indonesia to study the German Development Cooperation Experience in that country.

Industry-level Collective Bargaining
Experts from German and France  participate in an international symposium on industy-level collective bargaining and expanding its coverage". The symposium is organized by the Korean  Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU).

Civic Education
A Delegation organized by the Korea Democracy Foundation and supported by the FES, travels to Germany in order to study specific aspects of civic education in Germany.

Transformation processes in transnational perspective
The Ehwa Womans University and the universities of Halle-Wittenberg and Jena hold a joint conference in Seoul on transformation discourses in Europe and Korea.

A Korean scholar of Chonnam University visits Germany for one month to take part in the 50th Anniversary International Symposium on the Korean Civil Code and to collect information for an ongoing research project.

Law on Non-Regular Work in Korea
Prof. Bernd Waas of the Hagen University and Dr. Lee Changhee, senior specialist on industrial relations and social dialogue of the ILO Beijing office, take part in an international seminar on the effectiveness of the Law on Non-Regular Work in Korea and further legislative reforms. This seminar is organized by the Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU).

Migration and Development
Three members of the Joint Committee for Migrant Workers in Korea (JCMK), supported by the FES, take part in a people's global action on migration, development and human rights in Manila.

US Military Realignment
The People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (PSPD), Green Korea United and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) jointly organize an international seminar on the US military realignment in Germany and Korea. Dr. Uwe Stehr, foreign policy advisor to the SPD parliamentary group, and Dr. Claudia Hadyt of the directory board of the Informationstelle Miliartisierung e. V. (IMI), present the German case. Dr. Hans-Joachim Schmidt, senior research associate at Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF), participate as a discussant.

Democracy and Civil Religion in the 21st Century
The Korean Association of Socio-Historic Studies, supported by the FES, holds an international conference on the relevance of Toqueville's concept of "civil religion” in our times.


Moellendorff, Korea and Gemany
The Ewha Academy for Advanced Studies, Ewha Womans University and the German Embassy,

supported by the FES, jointly hold a symposium on the significance of Paul Georg von Möllendorff, the first foreign adviser and Vice-Minister of the Choson government, on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of his arrival to Korea. Prof. Gottfried-Karl Kindermann, Muenchen University, and Prof. Marion Eggert, Bochum University are among the contributors to this symposium.

Global Economic Imbalances
Dr. LEE Jong Kyu, Bank of Korea, participates in a two-day international conference on
"Challenges for the International Finacial System in Times of Crisis" in Beijing, co-organized by the Renmin University of China and the FES.

40th Anniversary of the Student Movement of 1968
Experts from Germany and Japan participate in an international symposium on the medium and long-term impact of the student movement of 1968 on politics and society. The symposium is organized by the Korean Association of German History (KAGH).

Lecture on 17 Years German Unification
Dr. Werner Kamppeter, the representative of FES in Korea, gives a lecture on German reunification at the Ministry of Unification.

Policies against Gender Discrimination
Korea Womenlink, supported by the FES, starts a research project on measures to ensure the effectiveness of policies against gender discrimination in the Korean labour market and holds a symposium on this issue later in the year. The results of this project will be published toward the end of 2007.

Security Sector Reform (SSR)
Two Korean scholars take part in an expert workshop on "Security Sector Reform (SSR): Lessons to be learned from Northeast and Southeast Asia" in Manila, co-organized by the Institute for Strategic and Development Studies (ISDS), the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF) and the FES.

Women Workers' Movement
The Korean Women Workers Associations (KWWA), supported by the FES, starts with a research project on a women workers movement and the development of new strategies for it. A workshop will be held in October.
The results of this project will be published in December.

Non-regular Woman Workers in Korea
The Korea Women's Associations United (KWAU), supported by the FES, holds a symposium on the non-regular woman workers in Korea and will publish booklets on this issue late in the year.

European and Asian Affairs
The Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) and the Global Research Institute (GRI) at Korea University, supported by FES, organises a special lecture series on European and Asian affairs for graduate and post-graduate students during 2007.

Research Stay in Germany
A Korean scholar of Chungang University visits to Germany for four months to do research on "Cultural Change in United Germany".

North Korea Tourism Development
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the FES co-organise a one-day workshop in Berlin on the development of tourism in North Korea.

Elections and Media Democracy
The Asia-Europe Perspective Forum (AEPF) and the FES jointly hold an international symposium on "Korea's 2007 Presidential Election and Political Development" in Seoul. One German expert presents a paper on media democracy and media policy.

Problems and Prospects of Mediterranean – EU relations
Institute of Mediterranean Studies and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation hold a joint seminar on the “The problem and prospects of Mediterranean-Europe relations.” One German expert draws parallels and marks differences between East Asia and the Mediterranean.

Democratic Civic Education
The Citizens' Alliance for Justice Society and Bright Politics, The Society for German Studies and the FES co-organize an international conference on "Democratic Civic Education and Development of Parties" in Seoul. One German expert speaks on the German political system and the rationale for civic education, and on civic education programs of German political foundations.

Medio-Democracy and Social Responsibility of Journalists
In cooperation with the Press Foundation, the Korean Committee for the Press and the FES a German expert for media and political communication talks on the exigencies of and the distortions inherent in modern mass media, their interaction with the theatrification of politics, policies and political decision-taking processes.

Government Delegation to Study German Unification Process
Seven Korean officials visit East Germany in a program organised by the head office of the FES in Germany.

Rise of Asia and Its Future
The FES-representative in Korea participates in an international conference, co-organised by the Korean Political Science Association and the Academy of East Asian Studies of Sungkyunkwan University, on "The Rise of Asia and Its Future: Global Impacts, Regional Implication and National Ramification", and presents a political regime and economic development.

Psyco-social Adaptation Problems
The Institute of Korean Unification Studies (IKUS) of the Yonsei University and the FES jointly hold a Korean-German symposium on "Psychological and Social Integration". Three German experts present papers on adaptation problems of refugees before unification and of East German citizens after unification.

Publication: Agenda for UN General Secretary
On the occasion of Ban Ki Mun’s assumption of the post of the General Secretary of the United Nations, an analysis of the challenges faced by the United Nations "A Priority Agenda for the Next UN Secreteray-General" is translated into Korean and published FES Korea.
 

Publication: FES Information Series on CD
A selection of 33 issues of the FES Information Series from 1998 to 2006 is published on a CD.

Union Revitalisation Strategies
The Korea Labour and Society Institute (KLSI), supported by the FES, starts its research on the possibilities and means to revitalise the labour union movement in Korea. A workshop will organised in December. Later a report on the results will be published too.

Working Korea 2007
The Korea Labour and Society Institute (KLSI), supported by the FES, does research on this issue and organizes a workshop in December. Afterwards the results of this project will be published.

European Integration Process

R. of China and the FES. He presented a paper on the expectations of the civil society movement towards ASEM.

Unification and the Role of the Church
The Institute of Korean Unification Studies IKUS of the Yonsei University and the FES jointly held an international symposium concerning "unification and the role of the church". Two German expert participated in this symposium and present a paper on experiences of unified Germany.

Women's Labor Related Law
Women Link supported by the FES researched into the administration's interpretation and the standpoint on equal employment act. Women Link organized a workshop on this theme.

Organizing and Negotiating in Government Workers Union
FES supported a research project on organizing and negotiating in government workers union. The Korea Labour and Society Institute KLSI organized a workshop on this theme. The results of this project have been published.

Collective Bargaining in the Public Sector
Korean Federation of Transportation, Public & Social Services Workers' Unions KPSU, supported by the FES, organized a two-day workshop on the collective bargaining of Verdi in Germany. Two German unionist of Verdi visited Korea to transmit their experiences.

Publication on a TUAC User's Guide for the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises
TUAC,
the Trade Union Advisory Council to the OECD, and the FES jointly published a Korean translation of "The TUAC User's Guide: What are the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and how to work with them?" The brochure includes the report of a workshop, which provided information on the TUAC User's Guide.

Building a Social Pillar for ASEM
One Korean trade unionist took part in an Asia-Europe Trade Union Dialogue  "Towards a Social Pillar for ASEM", in Bonn for two days, organized by the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung.

Social Security System
A social security policy expert from the Korea Institute of Health and Social Affairs (KIHSA) participated in a four-day seminar on the pension scheme and health insurance in rural areas, jointly organized by Shanghai Research Center on Aging and the FES. The expert presented a paper on the characteristics and experiences of the pension and health insurance system in the rural areas of Korea.

Citizen's University of Civil Society 2002
The FES supported a year-round program to disseminate the idea and practice of civil society and NGOs among the general public and NGO practitioners in Korea, through the medium of the weekly newspaper Citizens Times.

Publication on 11 Years after German Unification 
The results of a seminar held in Seoul in November 2001 has been published by the Institute of Social Sciences, Sogang University, Social Science Studies, Vol. 10/2002, pp 9-106.

The Korea Association of Area Studies KAAS and the FES jointly organized an international seminar on the relations between North Korea and the European countries: problems and prospects.

The Institute of Korean Unification Studies IKUS of the Yonsei University and the FES jointly held an international symposium concerning "divided countries, divided minds. Unification in the dimension of human well-being". Two German experts participated in this symposium and presented papers on experiences of unified Germany.

Reform of the International Financial Architecture
A scholar from the University of Duisburg presented a paper on the reform of the international financial architecture at a roundtable, organized by the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy. His paper has been published in June.

FES and the International Federation of Journalists IFJ jointly organized an international workshop on "equality and quality - women in the media".

The executive director for the Korea Women's Political Solidarity visited Germany for a one-week program to exchange experiences with German young female leaders from politics, media and NGOs. The focus was on women networks, party policies on women and other instruments to strengthen the role of younger women in society.

A Korean scholar has taken part in a two-day workshop in Singapore organized by FES office for regional co-operation in Southeast Asia, Singapore which addresses social policy issues in Asia.

FES and Women Link organized jointly a three-day workshop about the training of counselors for women workers.

Employment Insurance System
Korea Labor Institute KLI, ILO and FES held a two-day conference on the role of the employment insurance scheme under the new economic environment. The proceedings of this conference will be published in March 2002.

Security Policy
Two Korean experts participated in a two-day intenational conference in Berlin on "Security Policy: A German-Asian Dialog", organized by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung.

National Strategy
A German expert took part in an international conference on "The National Strategies of the Major Powers In the Post-Cold War Era of Globalization", organized by the Sejong Institute in Seoul.

Gender-mainstreaming
A Korean trade union related woman activist took part in a five-day  workshop on "Gender-mainstreaming in the Trade Unions" in Berlin, co-organized by the German Federation of Trade Unions (DGB) and the FES.

Human Rights Conference
A Korean scholar participated in a two-day conference in Manila, organized by the FES.

OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises
TUAC,
the Trade Union Advisory Council to the OECD, and FES Korea jointly organized an Information seminar on the recently revised OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises. These Guidelines are supposed to ensure that multinational enterprises observe the labour and human rights of their workers, respect local communities and the environment, and contribute to the economic development of the countries in which they operate.

Women and the Unification of Germany
FES and the Women Making Peace organized a one-day workshop evaluating women's policy and unification in Germany.

Scholarly Conference on German Unification
Two experts from Germany took part in a two-day international conference, organized by the Korean-German Economic Association. Following this conference they gave a lecture at other academic forum.

Eco-Campus
A German Professor participated in a symposium concerning the eco-campus, organized by Yonsei Institute of Environmental Science & Techonolgy  and the FES.

Making Regional Integration Work
A leading member of the ASEM-NGO-Forum visited Brussels for a three-week program to study some of the inner mechanisms of the European Union.

Publications about Trade Union Perspectives
The results of two major research projects about "trade unions and restructuring" were published, summaries of which are available for download. 

February

"Coexistence of Cultures" is Possible
The head of the Peace Research Institute in Frankfurt, Prof. Harald Mueller was invited to visit South Korea and speak about his book on the "coexistence of cultures" which had been translated into Korean and published recently. At a roundtable discussion with leading sociologists he explained his counterarguments against Huntington's "clash of civilization" in more detail.  Prof. Mueller, who is a leading scholar on defense policy developments presented as well a paper about security policy at a roundtable organized by the Korea Institute for Defense Analysis. New Challenges for the Social Democratic Party of Germany
The more than one hundred years old Social Democratic Party of Germany is currently in a very important process of transformation. A well recognized journalist who had studied in Germany and who is familiar with the developments of the Social Democratic Party in Germany has written a book about history, structures and challenges for the SPD in Germany. The publication - in Korean - is available as download.

Eco-audit as Important Environmental Tool
A German scholar from the University of Kaiserslautern presented at two workshops key aspects of introducing "eco-audit" as tool to have environmentally sound production.

Renowned East-Asia-Experts Participates in Conferences
The renowned German East-Asia-expert Prof. Hanns Maull from the University of Trier visited South Korea to participate in an international conference at the Seoul National University and to hold discussions about regional security and new developments concerning ASEM.

Reforming Trade Unions
As part of the collaboration with Korean trade unions FES supported a study about pros and cons of introducing an industrial unions in Korea. The publication was finally produced in March. In the same month the office of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung published a book about "structural change and trade unions" written by Prof. Kang Su-dol.

Former Minister of Finance Talks about "Information Age - Challenges for Management"
Former minister of Finance, Prof. Manfred Lahnstein visited South Korea and presented his thoughts about the challenges of the information age. His exposition helped to identify some of the key dimensions of the dramatic transformation which can be currently observed.

Visit of Deputy Speaker Mrs. Anke Fuchs
The German Deputy Speaker Mrs. Anke Fuchs, who serves as well as deputy chairperson of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung visited Korea for four days. Mrs. Fuchs who has last been here in November 1999 received an honorary doctorate degree at the Seoul City University. At the ceremony she presented a paper on "legal aspects of the reunification of Germany".

Mrs. Fuchs met politicians and leaders of civil society, and she presented a paper on "trade unions and political parties in Germany - experiences of the German trade unions and the Social Democratic Party" at a roundtable discussion with trade unions leaders.

Global Governance Structures in the New Century
Two distinguished scholars from the Sejong Institute and the Korea Institute for Defense Analysis participated in an international conference jointly organized by the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik in Ebenhausen and FES.

Scholarship in Germany on Environmental Matters
A leading member of Green Korea left for a three month program in Germany. The working visits provide the opportunity to join the Institute for Development and Peace (Prof. Nuscheler) and research into aspects of the ecological debate in Germany.

New Editions of FES-Information-Series
A new publication on the "new center in Germany" by Prof. Ahn Suck-kyo and the "pension system reform" in Germany by Prof. Kim Sang-ho have been published - in Korean - and are available for download.

May

Fighting Corruption
FES joined hands with the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy to organize a workshop about fighting corruption. The German parliamentarian Prof. Juergen Meyer presented a paper about German approaches to fight corruption, Korean experts presented findings and suggestions.

ASEM-NGO-Delegation visits Europe
The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung invited five leading NGO-leaders from Korea, Thailand and Malaysia to a two-week information program in Europe which offered the opportunity to meet with government officials, parliamentarians, NGO-leaders and leading scholars and discuss the preparation for the ASEM-meeting in October in Seoul.

Environmental Awareness in Europe
A scholar from a German university was invited to visit Korea and present a paper about "trends and prospects of the environmental discussion in the European Union". He as well participated in roundtable discussions with NGO-activists to discuss ongoing environmental reform projects in Germany and Korea.

Studies in Germany and Brussels
A leading female scholar from the Korea Women Development Institute left for a three-weeks program in Brussels to study how the European Union tries to advance gender issues. A female trade union leader left for Germany to join for one month a German trade union and to foster relationships between Korean and German trade unions.

Modernization of Political Parties
Mr. Wolfgang Weege from the international department of the Social Democratic Party who formerly worked closely with Willy Brandt visited Korea for a two-week program and met leading Korean politicians. Mr. Weege participated in a number of roundtable discussions about the modernization of political parties in Germany.

June

Third Ways in Europe
A leading political scientist from Germany, Prof. Wolfgang Merkel, presented a paper about "The third ways of Social Democracy into the 21st Century" at a workshop organized at the Sungkonghoe University. The paper is available for down load. In June the Foundation published a booklet written by a Korean scholar about the German debate on the "new center".

NGOs, Social Movements and Democracy
A German expert who deals extensively with research into the future of civil society visited Korea to give lectures and presentations at Seoul National Universiy, Sejong Institute and Sungkonghoe University. His topic was "NGOs, social movements and democracy: the transnational perspective". The paper is available for download.

New Methods of Job Placement and Job Counseling in Germany
A researcher from the Federation of Korean Trade Union Research Center visited Germany for a three-month period focusing on new trends in job placement and job counseling. She did the project in close collaboration with the DGB, the German national trade union center.

July

ASEM and beyond
A
scholar from Korea-University visited Germany to research into European perspectives on ASEM. A publication summarizing the main results is planned for September.

August

Legal Affairs and Trade Unions
Four Korean lawyers working for trade unions visited Germany and participated in a program that gave insights into the German trade union-based legal protection scheme for workers and unions' legal affairs departments.

September

Scholarly Conference on European-Asian Relations
Two scholars from Germany participated in an international conference organized by the Korean Economic Association. Following this conference they gave lectures at other academic fora.

October

Labour Law Reform
FES, the Trade Union Advisory Council to the OECD TUAC and the two national centers organized a one-day workshop assessing recent labour market reforms.

ASEM and Labour

Fighting Corruption in Asia
FES and PSPD once again collaborated in hosting an international workshop on fighting corruption. Participants for this meeting who come from the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia presented papers about the fight against corruption in their respective countries.(more about Regional Conference on Corruption)

Comparison of Tripartism in Korea and Selected European Countries
The Korea Labour Institute, the Tripartite Commission and the FES jointly organized an international forum to deliberate on international experiences with tripartite structures. FES invited two speakers from Germany to participate in this debate.

Social Policy and the European Union
A Korean scholar participated in a three-week program in Brussels to study the increasing relevance of European decisions on social policy trends in the member countries of the European Union.
